The overhead water tank, located near Ameerpet Center on the route towards Erragadda and Kukatpally, had become structurally unsafe over the years. The tank was originally built around 65 years ago with a capacity of 10 lakh litres and at a height of 80 meters to supply drinking water to thousands of families in the locality.
However, after a technical inspection by experts from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), the structure was declared unsafe and unfit for use. It had remained unused for nearly 15 years.
Complex Location Raised Safety Concerns
The demolition posed a serious challenge due to the surrounding environment:
- Residential houses located on three sides within 100 yards
- Government offices including Water Board, GHMC, and Housing Board situated just 20 meters away
- Presence of an electric transformer nearby
- A busy road running along one side
Given these risks, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Jal Mandali) requested HYDRAA to execute a safe demolition.
4-Hour Precision Operation Completed Without Incident
After receiving the request, HYDRAA conducted a detailed field inspection and planned the demolition strategy carefully.
- Operation began at 6:00 AM on April 22, 2026
- The structure had 6 pillars supporting the tank
- Iron ropes were secured around the structure
- Two high-capacity Hitachi machines were deployed
The team completed the entire demolition within 4 hours, by around 10:00 AM, ensuring that the structure collapsed within the designated area without causing any damage to nearby buildings or infrastructure.
Residents and Officials Express Relief
