Women Voters Drive Record Turnout in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Elections 2026

Historic participation marks a new chapter in India’s democratic journey as female voters outpace men in both states

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday reported a historic surge in voter turnout during the Legislative Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and the first phase of polling in West Bengal, with women voters leading participation in both states.

Polling began at 7:00 AM on April 23, 2026, alongside by-elections in select constituencies of Gujarat and Maharashtra. According to ECI officials, enhanced voter facilitation measures and extensive monitoring contributed to the unprecedented turnout.

Tamil Nadu recorded an impressive voter turnout of 84.69% till 5 pm, surpassing its previous highest of 78.29% in 2011. Notably, women voters registered a higher participation rate at 85.76%, compared to 83.57% among men, reflecting a significant rise in female electoral engagement. This marks a sharp increase from 73.63% in 2021 and 70.14% in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Historically, Tamil Nadu witnessed moderate voter participation in the early decades after Independence, followed by a steady rise in the late 20th century. However, the 2026 figures represent the highest-ever turnout, signaling renewed public enthusiasm in the democratic process.

In West Bengal, Phase-I polling recorded an even higher turnout of 91.78%, exceeding its previous peak of 84.72% in 2011. Female participation stood at 92.69%, again surpassing male turnout of 90.92%, indicating a broader national trend of increasing female voter engagement.

West Bengal has traditionally recorded high voter turnout, rising from around 50% in the early post-Independence period to over 80% in recent decades. The 2026 figures mark a significant escalation in voter mobilisation and enthusiasm.

The elections were conducted on a massive scale, covering over 9.33 crore voters across more than 1.19 lakh polling stations, with nearly 6 lakh polling personnel deployed.

Tamil Nadu alone accounted for 234 Assembly constituencies with over 5.7 crore electors, while West Bengal’s Phase-I covered 152 constituencies involving approximately 3.6 crore voters.

To ensure transparency, the ECI implemented 100% live webcasting of polling stations. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners S. S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, closely monitored the process in real time.

Operational efficiency was further enhanced through the ECINET platform, enabling Presiding Officers to upload polling data immediately after voting concluded, reducing delays in reporting.

Meanwhile, by-elections in Gujarat and Maharashtra recorded comparatively lower turnout. Constituencies such as Umreth in Gujarat reported 59.03%, while Baramati and Rahuri in Maharashtra recorded 57.48% and 55.31% respectively till 5 pm.

Although these figures are provisional and exclude service voters and postal ballots, they highlight an unprecedented level of participation, especially driven by women voters, marking a defining moment in India’s democratic landscape.
