Sultan Bazaar Police Register Ragging Case Against 12 Students
According to the college administration, allegations emerged that first-year BDS students were subjected to ragging by final-year BDS students staying at the Osmania Medical College hostel in Koti.
Following the allegations, the Sultan Bazaar Police registered a case against 12 final-year BDS students under the Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act.
The case was filed based on a complaint lodged by Dr. Sarjeev Singh Yadav, Principal of Osmania Dental College.
First-Year Students Allegedly Harassed for Six Months
According to the college administration, the accused students allegedly harassed first-year students for nearly six months.
The alleged acts included:
- Forcing junior students to fetch cigarettes
- Collecting food delivery orders
- Filling water coolers
- Making juniors perform “wall-chair” punishments
The administration also stated that some of the accused students allegedly assaulted house surgeons who attempted to intervene and stop the ragging.
College Suspends 12 Students for Six Months
Dr. Sarjeev Singh Yadav said the college had previously warned the students regarding their behaviour.
However, according to the Principal, there was no improvement.
As a result:
- All 12 students were suspended for six months
- Parents of the students were summoned
- Parents were informed about the incidents
Principal Warns There Is No Place for Ragging
Dr. Sarjeev Singh Yadav asserted that there is no place for ragging in the institution.
He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone endangering the future and well-being of students.
Expressing concern about the impact of ragging, he said such practices have caused severe psychological trauma and even loss of life among students in different parts of the country.
The Principal stated that further action would be considered after receiving the police investigation report.
He also said the college plans to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and conduct awareness programmes to prevent future incidents.
DCP Shilpavalli Says Ragging Is a Criminal Offence
Khairatabad Zone DCP Shilpavalli emphasised that ragging is a criminal offence punishable by law.
According to the DCP:
- Ragging can attract up to six months of imprisonment
- If ragging leads to a victim’s suicide, punishment could extend to life imprisonment
She reiterated that students must understand the serious legal consequences associated with ragging.
Postgraduate Student Allegedly Assaulted During Incident
DCP Shilpavalli stated that the complaint was lodged by the dental college principal after allegations emerged that final-year students had been ragging first-year BDS students at the hostel.
According to the police officer, the victims reportedly endured various forms of harassment and punishments for six months but did not initially report the incidents.
The matter came to light when a postgraduate student confronted the seniors during an alleged ragging incident and was subsequently assaulted.
Following an internal inquiry conducted by the college, the institution suspended the 12 students.

Police are continuing the investigation and verification process in the case.
DCP Shilpavalli urged students to immediately report any incidents of ragging to college authorities or the police.
