No Water, No Power: Telangana Farmers Face ₹20,000 Crore Crop Loss

A shortage of irrigation water and frequent power cuts are taking a heavy toll on agriculture in Telangana, with preliminary estimates putting crop losses at around ₹20,000 crore.

HYDERABAD: A shortage of irrigation water and frequent power cuts are taking a heavy toll on agriculture in Telangana, with preliminary estimates putting crop losses at around ₹20,000 crore.

Crops across an estimated 20 lakh to 25 lakh acres have reportedly suffered damage, raising concerns among farmers over declining yields and mounting financial losses.

According to estimates based on a satellite survey conducted by Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, paddy crops have been damaged across nearly 16 lakh acres, while cotton crops have been affected over another four lakh to five lakh acres.

Cotton farmers are expected to face the steepest losses, with yields likely to decline by nearly 50 per cent. Cotton, which normally produces around 10 to 12 quintals per acre, is now expected to yield only about five quintals in several affected areas. Paddy yields, meanwhile, are estimated to fall by 15 to 20 per cent.

The next 20 to 30 days are considered crucial for the standing crops. Farmers fear that continued shortages of irrigation water and electricity could cause further damage, pushing the total crop losses to as much as ₹30,000 crore if the situation persists.

With crops withering in the fields, farmers are urging the government and concerned authorities to ensure an adequate supply of irrigation water and uninterrupted power to save the remaining crop and prevent further losses.
