KBR Park Flyover Project Scrapped After Tree Felling, Congress Government Faces Criticism
The Telangana government’s decision to scrap the proposed flyover and underpass project around KBR Park has triggered criticism from environmentalists and opposition groups, with questions being raised over the alleged felling of nearly 3,000 trees and expenditure incurred on the project.
Hyderabad: The Telangana government’s decision to scrap the proposed flyover and underpass project around KBR Park has triggered criticism from environmentalists and opposition groups, with questions being raised over the alleged felling of nearly 3,000 trees and expenditure incurred on the project.
According to sources, a significant amount of work had already been carried out as part of the proposed infrastructure project, with estimates putting the expenditure at around ₹300 crore. Critics have questioned why such a large amount of public money was spent before the project was ultimately abandoned.
Environmentalists have expressed anger over the cutting of thousands of trees in connection with the project. Members of the environmental movement have questioned whether the trees that were felled can ever be restored and raised concerns about the ecological impact of the construction activity around KBR Park.
The project had been promoted as part of plans to ease traffic congestion around the busy KBR Park junctions through the construction of flyovers and underpasses. However, the government has now decided to drop the proposal, prompting criticism over the decision-making process.

Opposition leaders and critics have accused the Congress government led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy of taking a hasty decision and wasting public funds. The criticism has intensified in view of the fact that substantial preparatory and construction-related work had reportedly already been undertaken.
The issue has also brought back comparisons with 2016, when the then BRS government had considered a similar proposal involving flyovers and underpasses around KBR Park. At that time, the plan was reportedly dropped following objections and suggestions from environmentalists, without large-scale tree felling.
Environmental groups had subsequently launched protests under the “Save KBR” campaign, opposing the proposed infrastructure works and warning about their impact on the park’s green cover.
With the latest decision to scrap the project, environmentalists and members of the public are now questioning the rationale behind cutting thousands of trees and spending substantial public funds on a project that has ultimately been abandoned.
The controversy is expected to fuel further debate over urban infrastructure planning, environmental protection and the use of public funds in Hyderabad.
