Monsoon Lung Infections: Pulmonologist Dr. Md. Mukarram Ali Warns Against Delaying Treatment and Self-Medication

Pulmonologist Dr. Md. Mukarram Ali advises early treatment for monsoon-related lung infections, warns against self-medication and unnecessary antibiotics, and explains how to prevent respiratory complications.

Respiratory infections increase significantly during the monsoon season due to higher humidity, damp indoor conditions, mold growth, and fungal exposure, according to consultant pulmonologist Dr. Md. Mukarram Ali. Speaking on Munsif News 24×7’s health awareness programme “Sehat Ki Baat,” Dr. Ali urged people not to ignore symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, breathlessness, or low oxygen levels and advised seeking early medical treatment to prevent serious complications.

Monsoon Increases the Risk of Lung Infections

During the programme, Dr. Md. Mukarram Ali explained that respiratory infections tend to rise sharply during the rainy season because of:

  • Increased humidity
  • Damp indoor environments
  • Mold growth
  • Fungal exposure

He advised the public to remain alert and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.

Do Not Ignore These Symptoms

Dr. Ali said people should not ignore the following warning signs during the monsoon:

  • Persistent cough
  • Fever
  • Breathlessness
  • Low oxygen levels

He stressed that delaying treatment can increase the risk of serious respiratory complications.

High-Risk Groups Need Extra Care

According to Dr. Ali, the following groups are at a significantly higher risk of developing severe respiratory infections:

  • Elderly people
  • Children
  • Diabetic patients
  • Asthma patients
  • COPD patients
  • Cancer patients
  • Transplant recipients
  • Dialysis patients
  • Individuals with weakened immunity

He advised these groups to be especially cautious during the monsoon season.

Avoid Self-Medication and Unnecessary Antibiotics

Dr. Mukarram Ali strongly cautioned against self-medication, particularly the unnecessary use of antibiotics.

He explained that viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, and indiscriminate use contributes to antibiotic resistance, making future infections more difficult and more expensive to treat.

Maintain Indoor Hygiene and Seek Early Medical Care

The pulmonologist advised people to:

  • Prevent dampness inside homes
  • Control mold growth
  • Practise proper hand hygiene
  • Wear masks when experiencing respiratory symptoms
  • Consult a doctor without delaying treatment

He said early diagnosis can help prevent serious complications, including:

  • Pneumonia
  • Respiratory failure
  • ICU admission

Consultant pulmonologist Dr. Md. Mukarram Ali, speaking on Munsif News 24×7’s “Sehat Ki Baat,” urged people to seek early treatment for monsoon-related lung infections instead of relying on self-medication. He warned that persistent cough, fever, breathlessness, and low oxygen levels should not be ignored, especially among high-risk groups, as timely diagnosis can prevent pneumonia, respiratory failure, and ICU admission.
