Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged the Central Government to intervene and facilitate coordination among partner states to ensure Telangana receives and utilizes its rightful share of water from the Tungabhadra Dam and river flow. During a high-level review meeting at Jalasoudha, the Chief Minister expressed concern that Telangana is entitled to 15.9 TMC of water from Tungabhadra but is currently receiving only 5 to 6 TMC. He said the issue is affecting irrigation under the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS), which is meant to provide water to 83,987 acres across nearly 75 villages in Jogulamba Gadwal district.

Telangana Entitled to 15.9 TMC but Receiving Only 5-6 TMC
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stated that Telangana has a rightful entitlement of 15.9 TMC of water from the Tungabhadra Dam and river flow.
However, he expressed concern that the state is currently receiving only 5 to 6 TMC, significantly below its allocated share.
According to the Chief Minister, water from RDS is intended to irrigate 83,987 acres in approximately 75 villages of Jogulamba Gadwal district.
CM Seeks Stronger Tungabhadra Board Under Central Water Commission
Since Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka are partner states in the Tungabhadra system, the Chief Minister requested the Centre to strengthen the Tungabhadra Board under the supervision of the Central Water Commission (CWC).
He said a stronger mechanism is needed to ensure efficient utilization of water shares among the three states.
High-Level Review Meeting Held at Jalasoudha
The review meeting at Jalasoudha was attended by:
- N. Uttam Kumar Reddy
- Jupally Krishna Rao
- Mallu Ravi
- A.P. Jitender Reddy
- Aditya Nath Das
- Senior officials of the Irrigation Department
The meeting reviewed issues related to the Tungabhadra Project, Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme, and inter-state water disputes.
RDS Barrage Safety and Pending Modernization Works Discussed
The Chief Minister stated that the RDS barrage has become dangerous and that safety-related works must be identified and taken up on an urgent basis.
Officials informed the Chief Minister that:
- Telangana Government has already deposited Rs 59 crore for the modernization of the Rajolibanda Diversion Canal.
- The modernization works have still not been completed.
- Package 1 and Package 2 works have not yet been taken up.
- Package 3 and Package 4 works have been completed.
The meeting decided that the issue would be raised prominently during the meeting of the Chief Ministers of the three states to be held under the chairmanship of the Union Jal Shakti Minister.
Engineers Explain Siltation Problem Near RDS
Engineers informed the meeting that expected water diversion towards Telangana is not being achieved because of heavy silt accumulation on the Telangana side near RDS.
The issue has reportedly reduced the effectiveness of water diversion into Telangana territory.
2004 Expert Committee Recommendations Yet to Be Implemented
During the review, officials discussed the recommendations made by an expert committee in 2004.
The committee had recommended desiltation of the affected areas.
However, it was noted that:
- The recommendations have not been implemented so far.
- Immediate desiltation measures should be undertaken.
- The Central Government should be requested to take action.
Since the silted area lies within Karnataka, the meeting decided to seek cooperation from the Karnataka Government for carrying out desiltation works.
CM Directs Preparation of Detailed Report
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy instructed Irrigation Department officials to prepare a comprehensive report immediately.
He directed officials to:
- Submit a representation to the Central Government seeking implementation of the 2004 expert committee recommendations.
- Analyze the present situation in comparison with the 2004 report.
- Prepare complete details for further action.
Alternative Water Utilization Plans Under Tungabhadra Lift Irrigation Scheme
The Chief Minister also instructed officials to explore all possible alternatives for maximizing water utilization under the Tungabhadra Lift Irrigation Scheme.
He specifically directed officials to:
- Increase the storage capacity of the Mallammakunta Balancing Reservoir.
- Expedite works related to utilizing water from Tummilla.
- Complete the necessary works as quickly as possible.
