As part of monsoon preparedness, Sri S. Srinivas, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Rajendranagar Zone, conducted a detailed inspection of Himayat Sagar Dam and its surrounding areas on June 29, 2026. During the inspection, the DCP reviewed safety measures and warned that all 17 gates of the dam may have to be opened completely if heavy unseasonal rains cause the reservoir to reach its full capacity. He also instructed officials to ensure public safety by taking preventive measures and remaining on high alert.

DCP Inspects Himayat Sagar Dam and Surrounding Areas
According to the press note issued by the Office of the DCP, Rajendranagar Zone, the inspection was carried out in view of the ongoing monsoon season and as part of precautionary safety measures.
The DCP was accompanied by:
- Inspector of Rajendranagar Police Station
- Dam Irrigation/Water Resources Officials
- Other departmental officers
The team conducted a comprehensive field inspection of Himayat Sagar Dam and its surrounding areas.
Rajendranagar MLA Lifted One Gate as Annual Practice
The press note stated that, as a long-standing tradition before heavy monsoon inflows every year, the local MLA of Rajendranagar Constituency traditionally lifts one gate of the dam up to one foot to release water.
Following this annual practice, Sri T. Prakash Goud, MLA of Rajendranagar Constituency, lifted one gate and released water on June 28, 2026.
All 17 Gates May Be Opened During Heavy Unseasonal Rains
The DCP stated that if heavy unseasonal rains cause the dam to reach its full capacity, all 17 gates may have to be lifted completely to discharge excess water.
Keeping this possibility in mind, he closely analyzed the potential challenges and issues that could affect:
- Residents living in the surrounding catchment areas
- People residing near the Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch
DCP Issues Safety Instructions to Officials
Emphasizing that absolutely no harm, danger, or inconvenience should befall the public, the DCP explained the required Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and preventive measures to all attending officials.
He strictly instructed the concerned departments to:
- Install proper and clearly visible barricading at vulnerable points.
- Remain highly vigilant and alert.
- Ensure both the public and civic authorities are prepared to tackle any emergency situation effectively.
