Doctors at KIMS Hospitals, Seethamadhara, have successfully removed a six-centimetre benign tumour from a young woman’s oesophagus using an advanced endoscopic procedure performed entirely through the mouth, without making an external incision.

The minimally invasive procedure, known as third-space endoscopy, allowed doctors to remove the tumour while preserving the oesophagus. The patient resumed oral feeding the following day and was discharged from the hospital within three days, according to the hospital.
Dr Chalapathi Rao Achanta, Chief Consultant for Gastroenterology, Interventional Endoscopy and Liver Transplant at KIMS Hospitals, Seethamadhara, said the patient had been experiencing difficulty swallowing for nearly four months.
An endoscopy and CT scan revealed a tumour measuring approximately six centimetres in the oesophagus. Further examination using endoscopic ultrasound found that the growth was a leiomyoma, a rare benign and non-cancerous tumour arising from the muscle layer of the oesophagus.
After discussions with the patient and her family regarding available treatment options, including robotic surgery, they opted for an advanced interventional endoscopic procedure.
Using flexible gastrointestinal endoscopy, the gastroenterology team removed the tumour through the mouth in a procedure lasting around two-and-a-half hours. Unlike conventional surgery, the treatment did not require an external wound or the placement of a drain tube.
The patient was able to start taking food orally the next day, was discharged within three days and reportedly resumed normal activities within a week.
Dr Chalapathi Rao Achanta said advances in therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy were expanding treatment options for complex digestive disorders while helping preserve the affected organs.
“Advanced endoscopic procedures can be used for a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including the removal of early-stage cancers and other tumours, drainage of infected pancreatic collections, restoration of blocked passages in the digestive tract, obtaining biopsies and treatment of bleeding blood vessels,” he said.

He added that KIMS Hospitals, Seethamadhara, has been performing advanced endoscopic procedures for the past eight years, with the techniques helping selected patients achieve faster recovery and an earlier return to normal activities.
According to Dr Achanta, the successful removal of the oesophageal leiomyoma demonstrates how organ-preserving and minimally invasive techniques may offer an alternative to major surgery for suitable patients.
“Such procedures can help preserve the anatomy and function of the affected organ while reducing recovery time and the need for prolonged hospitalisation,” he said.
The patient and her family expressed their gratitude to the gastroenterology team and hospital staff, saying they were particularly pleased that the procedure was completed without an external wound and that the patient was able to return to normal life within a short period.
